Military Maps & Prints

About this collection

Military Maps & Prints presents the military maps and prints of Bartele Gallery, a dealer in antique maps and prints in Langweer, the Netherlands. Bartele Gallery is the seller of every piece on this site.

For four centuries war was followed on paper. Engravers in Antwerp and Amsterdam drew the sieges of the Dutch revolt as they happened; French engineers published the plans of every fortress Louis XIV took; newspapers sold seat-of-war maps so that readers could follow the Crimea, the American Civil War and the Western Front; and the great uniform series of the 1800s recorded every regiment's coat and plume.

The maps and prints here come from those atlases, histories, newspapers and plate books. Every one is a period original, printed in its own day and often coloured by hand. The date given is the date the sheet was printed. Where a date is uncertain, we say so.
