About knights & armour
The armour prints of the 1840s were made by a generation fascinated by the Middle Ages. Antiquaries studied the armour in royal collections and drew it plate by plate, and publishers issued hand-coloured series of knights, jousts and tournaments in full heraldic colour.
The collection also covers the weapons and engines of war: swords, polearms and helmets, medieval siege towers and catapults, and the 18th-century cannon foundry plates of Diderot's Encyclopedie, which show every stage of casting and boring a gun.

Questions about knights & armour
Are the knight prints medieval?
No. They were made in the 1800s from studies of real armour and medieval manuscripts, and they are original prints of that date. The listing gives the period the subject shows and the date the print was made.
What makes the Diderot plates collectable?
They are the most complete visual record of 18th-century industry, engraved with great precision for the Encyclopedie of Diderot and d'Alembert, and the artillery plates are among the most sought after.
