What the condition grades mean
Excellent
Bright and clean, with no faults worth mentioning.
Very good
Only light signs of age, such as faint toning.
Good
Normal signs of age for a sheet of this period: toning, some foxing, small marks or neat old repairs.
Fair

Every fault we see is written in the condition note, and the whole sheet is shown uncropped in the photos.

An original antique lithograph of the alliance between France and the republic of San Marino, from Madou's Vie de Napoléon, published at Brussels in 1827. The sheet is lettered ALLIANCE AVEC LA RÉPUBLIQUE DE St MARIN in open capitals above the image. The walled town of San Marino crowns its crag at the upper left while the general, on foot, points out a gun to an elderly envoy on horseback, with a field piece and its team at the left and grenadiers drawn up at the right.

The printed caption below the image reads: Napoléon fait présent à la république de quatre pièces de canon et ordonne qu'une provision de blé lui soit délivrée gratuitement. In English: Napoleon makes the republic a present of four pieces of cannon and orders that a supply of wheat be delivered to it free of charge.

This plate belongs to the two volume Vie de Napoléon published at Brussels in 1827 by the Lithographie royale de Jobard, with a text compiled from the documents Napoleon dictated on Saint Helena. The plates were drawn on stone by Jean-Baptiste Madou, and the sheets have long been collected singly as well as in the bound work.

San Marino is rarely the subject of a Napoleonic print, and the plate is a view of the hill town as well as a record of the gesture of 1797 by which the French recognized the old republic. It is printed from the stone in black on a cream wove sheet, the tone built from crayon rather than from cut line, with no color added.

Condition: Light wear to the bottom left corner. Age toning, darker at the edges; handling soiling along the edges and scattered foxing in the margins. Printed image clean.

The oblong format hangs well over a desk or a mantelpiece, and because the plates in the series share the same size and style of lettering, a group bought together reads as a set rather than as an assortment.

This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed. Any framed or interior images are shown for presentation and inspiration only, unless the listing explicitly states that the item is sold framed.
