Antique French Military Lithograph, Soldiers with Pack and Rifle, c.1820

This early 19th-century French lithograph depicts two infantry soldiers standing in quiet conversation, rendered with a refined yet direct observational style characteristic of the formative years of lithographic printing. One figure faces forward, resting both hands on the barrel of his rifle, while the other is shown in profile, carrying a full campaign pack with rolled blanket and satchel, details that vividly convey the lived reality of the common soldier. Their uniforms, including the distinctive shako and early military coat, situate the scene within the Napoleonic or immediate post-Napoleonic period, a time when France’s military imagery held strong cultural resonance.

In the background, a lightly sketched group of marching troops and a regimental flag provide context without distracting from the central figures. The composition balances intimacy and narrative, focusing on the individuality of the soldiers while hinting at the broader machinery of the army behind them. The soft tonal transitions and grainy texture are typical of early lithography, lending the print a subtle atmospheric quality distinct from engraving.

The lower right bears the inscription “Lithog: de Cte de Lasteyrie,” identifying the lithographer as the Comte de Lasteyrie, one of the pioneers who introduced lithography to France in the early 19th century. His involvement places this print among the earlier examples of the medium in French printmaking history.

This work would appeal to collectors of Napoleonic material, early lithography, and military costume, as well as to interior designers seeking an understated yet historically rich decorative element. Its monochrome palette and balanced composition make it particularly suitable for pairing with other period prints or displaying as a standalone piece in a refined setting.

Condition report: Scattered light foxing throughout the sheet, most visible in the margins and upper field. Minor toning consistent with age. Edges show light wear but remain intact. The image itself is clean and well-preserved, with strong contrast. No backing; the sheet is not laid down.

Framing tips: This print would benefit from a dark walnut or ebonized frame with a generous warm ivory mat to echo the tones of the paper. A museum glass finish will reduce glare while protecting the surface. Suitable for both classic and contemporary interiors with a historical accent.
