An original antique lithograph of the battle of Aboukir, from Vie de Napoléon, published at Brussels in 1827. The sheet is lettered BATAILLE D'ABOUKIR in capitals above the image. Bonaparte sits a white horse at the left among his officers, beside palm trees, a drummer and a grenadier, while turbaned Ottoman soldiers kneel and bow before him at the right with their colors lowered; the fort of Aboukir stands on the horizon and a dead man lies in the foreground.
The printed caption below the image reads: Napoléon avait remporté une victoire signalée sur 18000 Turcs débarqués à Aboukir; le 2 Août 1799, les débris de cette armée furent forcés par la famine et par la misère à déposer leurs armes aux pieds du vainqueur. In English: Napoleon had won a signal victory over 18,000 Turks landed at Aboukir; on 2 August 1799 the remnants of that army were forced by hunger and misery to lay down their arms at the feet of the victor.
The plate comes from Vie de Napoléon, issued in two volumes at Brussels in 1827 by Marcellin Jobard's Lithographie royale, its text compiled by a society of men of letters from the documents Napoleon dictated and corrected at Saint Helena. The lithographs are credited to the young Jean-Baptiste Madou (1796 to 1877), later celebrated in Belgium as a painter of genre scenes.
The Ottoman army landed at Aboukir in July 1799 was destroyed on 25 July, and the garrison that held out in the fort surrendered on 2 August, the date the caption gives. It was Bonaparte's last victory in Egypt before he sailed for France. It is a crayon lithograph printed in black, uncolored as issued, with the lettered title above the image and the caption in script below.
Condition: Age toning, darker at the edges; handling soiling along the edges and scattered foxing in the margins. Printed image clean.
Every plate in the series shares the same format and lettering, so a group framed alike reads as a set over a desk, a mantelpiece or along a corridor.
