Very good
Only light signs of age, such as faint toning.
Good
Normal signs of age for a sheet of this period: toning, some foxing, small marks or neat old repairs.

Every fault we see is written in the condition note, and the whole sheet is shown uncropped in the photos.

An original antique lithograph of the battle of Castiglione, from Madou's Vie de Napoléon, published at Brussels in 1827. The sheet is lettered BATAILLE DE CASTIGLIONE in open capitals above the image. Bonaparte and his staff sit their horses on a rise beneath the trees, the dead lie by a broken fence in the foreground, and columns of infantry advance through the smoke of the action in the valley below.

The printed caption below the image reads: Le mamelon de Médole fut emporté. La cavalerie légère surprit le quartier général, et faillit enlever Wurmser. Partout l'ennemi se mit en retraite. In English: The hillock of Medole was carried. The light cavalry surprised the headquarters and nearly carried off Wurmser. Everywhere the enemy fell back.

This plate belongs to the two volume Vie de Napoléon published at Brussels in 1827 by the Lithographie royale de Jobard, with a text compiled from the documents Napoleon dictated on Saint Helena. The plates were drawn on stone by Jean-Baptiste Madou, and the sheets have long been collected singly as well as in the bound work.

Castiglione, fought on 5 August 1796, was one of the decisive actions of the first Italian campaign, and the caption records the cavalry raid that came close to carrying off the Austrian commander Wurmser from his own headquarters. It is printed from the stone in black on a cream wove sheet, the tone built from crayon rather than from cut line, with no color added.

Condition: Age toning, darker at the edges; handling soiling along the edges and scattered foxing in the margins. A small light fleck in the image, otherwise clean.

Framed simply, with a generous mat to let the wide margins show, the plate suits a study, a paneled dining room or a corridor, and it sits naturally beside other Napoleonic material such as campaign maps and portraits of the marshals.
