An original antique lithograph of the battle of Mondovi in Piedmont, from Vie de Napoléon, published at Brussels in 1827. The sheet is lettered BATAILLE DE MONDOVI in capitals above the image. Bonaparte on a white horse and his mounted staff watch from a hillside as the fighting spreads across a wide valley below, while in the right foreground a peasant woman sits beside a fallen soldier, with a drum and discarded weapons lying in the road.

The printed caption below the image reads: Les Piémontais laissèrent à Mondovi trois mille morts, quinze cents prisonniers dont trois généraux huit pièces de canon et dix drapeaux. In English: The Piedmontese left at Mondovi three thousand dead, fifteen hundred prisoners including three generals, eight cannon and ten flags.

The plate comes from Vie de Napoléon, issued in two volumes at Brussels in 1827 by Marcellin Jobard's Lithographie royale, its text compiled by a society of men of letters from the documents Napoleon dictated and corrected at Saint Helena. The lithographs are credited to the young Jean-Baptiste Madou (1796 to 1877), later celebrated in Belgium as a painter of genre scenes.

Mondovi, fought on 21 April 1796, broke the Piedmontese army in the opening weeks of the Italian campaign and led within days to the armistice of Cherasco, which took the kingdom of Sardinia out of the war. The composition pushes the battle back into the middle distance and gives the foreground to the woman and the dead soldier, a painter's choice that is unusual in a military series. It is a crayon lithograph printed in black, uncolored as issued, with the lettered title above the image and the caption in script below.

Condition: Age toning, darker at the edges; handling soiling along the edges and scattered foxing in the margins. Printed image clean.

Every plate in the series shares the same format and lettering, so a group framed alike reads as a set over a desk, a mantelpiece or along a corridor.
