Very good
Only light signs of age, such as faint toning.
Good
Normal signs of age for a sheet of this period: toning, some foxing, small marks or neat old repairs.

Every fault we see is written in the condition note, and the whole sheet is shown uncropped in the photos.

An original antique lithograph of the battle of Montebello, from Madou's Vie de Napoléon, published at Brussels in 1827. The sheet is lettered BATAILLE DE MONTEBELLO in open capitals above the image. A mounted general on a gray horse points the way at the center, surrounded by his staff and hussars, a dead horse lies in the foreground at the left, and the wounded rest beside an abandoned gun at the right while the battle runs on toward a bridge and village in the smoke.

In English: The Austrian army, after fighting with great fury, left 3000 dead and 6000 prisoners on the field. General Lannes covered himself with glory. The French performed prodigies of intrepidity.

Jean-Baptiste Madou, who lived from 1796 to 1877, was the outstanding Belgian lithographer of his generation and later a celebrated painter of genre scenes. His Vie de Napoléon, issued in two volumes at Brussels in 1827 by Marcellin Jobard's Lithographie royale, is among the largest undertakings of his early career, made while lithography was still a young process on the continent.

Montebello was fought on 9 June 1800, five days before Marengo, and Lannes, named in the caption, later took his ducal title from it, so the plate belongs with any group assembled around the marshals. The sheet is a crayon lithograph, black on cream wove paper and uncolored, and the modeling of smoke, cloth and sky shows how much Madou could draw from a medium still new in his day.

Condition: Light wear to the bottom right corner. Age toning, darker at the edges; handling soiling along the edges and scattered foxing in the margins. Printed image clean.

The oblong format hangs well over a desk or a mantelpiece, and because the plates in the series share the same size and style of lettering, a group bought together reads as a set rather than as an assortment.
