An original antique lithograph of the battle of Rivoli, from Madou's Vie de Napoléon, published at Brussels in 1827. The sheet is lettered BATAILLE DE RIVOLI in open capitals above the image. A high mountain panorama with snow peaks along the skyline, Bonaparte and his staff riding out from the left, a dismounted officer leading his horse at the center and the smoke of the action filling the valley at the right.
The printed caption below the image reads: Quarante mille Autrichiens commandés par le maréchal Alvinzy sont battus par vingt deux mille Français, et leur abandonnent douze pièces de canon, des drapeaux et sept mille prisonniers. In English: Forty thousand Austrians commanded by Marshal Alvinzy are beaten by twenty two thousand French, and abandon to them twelve pieces of cannon, colors and seven thousand prisoners.
Jean-Baptiste Madou, who lived from 1796 to 1877, was the outstanding Belgian lithographer of his generation and later a celebrated painter of genre scenes. His Vie de Napoléon, issued in two volumes at Brussels in 1827 by Marcellin Jobard's Lithographie royale, is among the largest undertakings of his early career, made while lithography was still a young process on the continent.
Rivoli, fought in January 1797, broke the last Austrian attempt to relieve Mantua and settled the campaign, and the plate is also a fine mountain landscape, with the town in the valley floor below the peaks. The printing is lithographic, black on wove paper, and the sheet is uncolored.
Condition: Light wear to the bottom left corner. Age toning, darker at the edges; handling soiling along the edges and scattered foxing in the margins. Printed image clean.
This is a print that rewards being hung at eye level where the caption can be read, and it makes a natural gift for a reader of Napoleonic history or a collector of military prints.
This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed. Any framed or interior images are shown for presentation and inspiration only, unless the listing explicitly states that the item is sold framed.
