An original antique lithograph of the expulsion of the foreign monks from Bologna, from Madou's Vie de Napoléon, published at Brussels in 1827. The sheet is lettered EXCÈS PUNIS À BOLOGNE in open capitals above the image. A broad square closed by a large palace, monks crowding round the general's gray horse, a grenadier hurrying them along, a statue on its pedestal behind and a woman kneeling in prayer at the right.
The printed caption below the image reads: Bonaparte fait distribuer quelqu'argent aux moines étrangers qui servaient l'ennemi et les oblige à sortir de Bologne. In English: Bonaparte has some money distributed to the foreign monks who were serving the enemy, and obliges them to leave Bologna.
Vie de Napoléon was published at Brussels in 1827 by the Lithographie royale de Jobard, the press of Marcellin Jobard, in two volumes, with a text by a society of men of letters drawn from the documents Napoleon dictated and corrected on Saint Helena. The plates are the work of Jean-Baptiste Madou (1796 to 1877), the leading Belgian lithographer of his generation, who worked closely with Jobard in the 1820s.
The lettering, excesses punished at Bologna, and the caption together present the episode as an act of justice tempered with charity, the monks being paid before they are sent away, which is very much the tone of the Saint Helena account. The sheet is a crayon lithograph, black on cream wove paper and uncolored, and the modeling of smoke, cloth and sky shows how much Madou could draw from a medium still new in his day.
Condition: Age toning, darker at the edges; handling soiling along the edges and scattered foxing in the margins. Printed image clean.
A single sheet from this series frames well in a plain dark molding with a wide off white mat, and a row of three or four hung together makes a coherent wall for a study, a library or a hallway.
This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed. Any framed or interior images are shown for presentation and inspiration only, unless the listing explicitly states that the item is sold framed.
