An original antique lithograph of Bonaparte at the table of the Grand Duke of Tuscany, from Madou's Vie de Napoléon, published at Brussels in 1827. The sheet is lettered BONAPARTE CHEZ LE DUC DE TOSCANE in open capitals above the image. A candlelit dining room with guests in court dress at the table, the duke wearing his sash beside the general, a hussar officer standing at the left and servants carrying in a covered tureen and dishes at the right.

The printed caption below the image reads: Pendant le repas on apporte à Napoléon la nouvelle de la reddition du Château de Milan. In English: During the meal the news of the surrender of the castle of Milan is brought to Napoleon.

Jean-Baptiste Madou, who lived from 1796 to 1877, was the outstanding Belgian lithographer of his generation and later a celebrated painter of genre scenes. His Vie de Napoléon, issued in two volumes at Brussels in 1827 by Marcellin Jobard's Lithographie royale, is among the largest undertakings of his early career, made while lithography was still a young process on the continent.

The episode belongs to Bonaparte's visit to Florence at the end of June 1796, when the citadel of Milan had just capitulated, and the room is drawn with the furniture, candelabra and high waisted gowns of the 1820s, which interests students of the decorative arts as much as of the campaign. The printing is lithographic, black on wove paper, and the sheet is uncolored.

Condition: Age toning, darker at the edges; handling soiling along the edges and scattered foxing in the margins. Printed image clean.

The oblong format hangs well over a desk or a mantelpiece, and because the plates in the series share the same size and style of lettering, a group bought together reads as a set rather than as an assortment.
