An original antique lithograph of Bonaparte received as a member of the Institut de France, from Madou's Vie de Napoléon, published at Brussels in 1827. The sheet is lettered RECEPTION PAR L'INSTITUT in open capitals above the image. A vaulted and columned hall lined with statues and crowded with members in civilian dress, the general standing out in uniform at the center right as academicians come forward to greet him.
The printed caption below the image reads: Bonaparte reçu membre de l'Institut, assistait assidument à ses séances. In English: Bonaparte, received as a member of the Institut, attended its sessions assiduously.
Jean-Baptiste Madou, who lived from 1796 to 1877, was the outstanding Belgian lithographer of his generation and later a celebrated painter of genre scenes. His Vie de Napoléon, issued in two volumes at Brussels in 1827 by Marcellin Jobard's Lithographie royale, is among the largest undertakings of his early career, made while lithography was still a young process on the continent.
Bonaparte was elected to the Institut in December 1797 and made much of the honor, styling himself member of the Institut in his proclamations from Egypt, so a plate showing him in uniform among the academicians is an unusual subject in a military series. The printing is lithographic, black on wove paper, and the sheet is uncolored.
Condition: Light wear to the bottom left corner; minor nicks to the left edge. Age toning, darker at the edges; handling soiling along the edges and scattered foxing in the margins. A small light fleck in the image, otherwise clean.
A single sheet from this series frames well in a plain dark molding with a wide off white mat, and a row of three or four hung together makes a coherent wall for a study, a library or a hallway.
This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed. Any framed or interior images are shown for presentation and inspiration only, unless the listing explicitly states that the item is sold framed.
