Title: Dramatic 19th-Century Lithograph of Knights with Elaborate Spiked Shields
Description: This remarkable hand-coloured lithograph features two armoured knights engaged in an intense duel with enormous, elaborately spiked shields. The print comes from the 1842 publication 'Der Rittersaal: Eine Geschichte des Ritterthums', a seminal work on the history, customs, and visual culture of knighthood. Created by Friedrich Martin von Reibisch with historical insights from Dr. Franz Kottenkamp, the scene vividly captures the grandeur and artistry of Medieval martial traditions.
The figures are adorned in meticulously rendered suits of armour, highlighted by rich gold, yellow, green, and crimson details. Their extraordinary shields, embellished with dramatic spikes and intricate designs, dominate the composition, creating a sense of both power and danger. The knight on the left strikes a defensive pose while his opponent appears ready to strike, showcasing movement and tension through finely detailed shading and posture.
Condition: The lithograph remains in excellent condition for its age. The hand-applied colours are vibrant and well-preserved, with only minor age-toning around the edges that adds character to this antique piece.
This visually stunning print appeals to collectors of historical and martial-themed artwork, as well as enthusiasts of knightly chivalry. Its bold design and historical significance make it a perfect candidate for framing and display in a curated setting.
