This is an original antique chromolithograph, printed in colors, from Le Moyen Âge et la Renaissance, lettered "ANGLETERRE. 1, 2, 3 et 4. Epée, Casque, Gantelets et Eperon (1334). 5. Bout de Ceinturon d'Epée (1337). 6. Epée (1296). 7 et 8. Ceinture de hanches et Collier (XVe Siècle). 9. Epée (1520)". Nine numbered pieces are spread over the sheet in bright color. Sword 1 has a gilt hilt with mask terminals and a blue scabbard on a blue belt. The helm 2 carries a gilt crown over red mantling, the plate gauntlets 3 are gray steel lined with red, and the spur 4 is gilt. The belt end 5 is set with colored stones, sword 6 hangs from a red patterned belt, the hip belt 7 is red with square gilt plaques, the collar 8 is formed of S-shaped links, and sword 9 shows a large gilt pommel and quillons.

The running heads read "LE MOYEN AGE ET LA RENAISSANCE." and "ARMURERIE." Beneath the image are the credits "A. Rivaud del.", "Chromolith. Lemercier, rue de Seine 57, Paris." and "Blanke et Kellerhoven lith." The caption translates as: England. 1, 2, 3 and 4, sword, helm, gauntlets and spur (1334). 5, end of a sword belt (1337). 6, sword (1296). 7 and 8, hip belt and collar (fifteenth century). 9, sword (1520).

Le Moyen Âge et la Renaissance was published in Paris in five volumes between 1848 and 1851. Paul Lacroix, who also wrote as the Bibliophile Jacob, edited the text, and Ferdinand Séré directed the illustrations, which is what the line "F. Séré direxit" on the plates records. The work surveys the customs, trades, sciences, arts and literature of Europe from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. Its arms and armor plates appear under the running head "ARMURERIE". The plates are chromolithographs, printed in color from a series of stones rather than colored by hand. This plate comes from the fourth volume, issued in 1851.

The red, blue and gold make this one of the brighter armor plates, and it frames well alone or in a group.

Condition: Light age toning, a little darker toward the edges; occasional small spots in the margins; light handling wear to the corners.
