An original antique engraving, colored by hand, captioned "FIELD MARSHAL VON BLUCHER, PRINCE OF WAGSTADT." Field Marshal Blücher rides a dappled gray horse walking to the left, his saber drawn and held straight out over the horse's head. He wears a black bicorn with blue and white plumes and gold tassels, a blue coat with a red collar and red cuffs, a breast star with crosses and medals, and gray overalls. His crimson saddlecloth is edged with a gold fringe. In the distance at the left a skirmish unfolds in clouds of smoke, with hussars in tall shakos, mounted officers and a field gun on its carriage, while at the right low buildings, a small tower and a church spire stand on the horizon. The face is worked in fine stipple.
Just below the image the plate is signed "Romney. Del. et. Sc." The publication line reads "London. Publish'd June 30. 1815. by Rich.d Evans Whites Row Spitalfields". The caption spells Wahlstatt as engraved, "WAGSTADT". Blücher commanded the Prussian army at Waterloo.
The plate was issued for The History of the Wars occasioned by the French Revolution by William Nicholson, LL.D., printed in London for Thomas Kelly of 17 Paternoster Row. The title page promises biographical sketches of the public characters of Europe, together with an account of the Congress of Vienna, the escape from Elba, Waterloo and the exile to Saint Helena, while the plates carry their own publication line naming Richard Evans of Whites Row, Spitalfields.
With its bold figure and clear, bright color, the plate reads well from across a room.
Condition: Light uneven toning, browner towards the edges. Marked handling soiling along the left, right and top edges. Scattered light foxing in the margin. Complete sheet, all four corners present.
