An original antique lithograph of the surrender of the Austrian general Provera after the battle of Millesimo, from Madou's Vie de Napoléon, published at Brussels in 1827. The sheet is lettered PROVERA FAIT PRISONNIER in open capitals above the image. The Austrian general, gray haired and in white uniform, holds out his sword to Bonaparte, who is mounted on a gray horse with hussars and staff behind him, while a hill town and mountains rise beyond the smoke.

The printed caption below the image reads: Le général Provera, qui, après la bataille de Millesimo, s'était renfermé dans un vieux château où il eut la gloire d'arrêter l'armée française pendant un jour entier, se rend prisonnier avec 1500 hommes qu'il commandait. In English: General Provera, who after the battle of Millesimo had shut himself up in an old castle, where he had the glory of holding up the French army for a whole day, surrenders as a prisoner with the 1500 men he commanded.

Vie de Napoléon was published at Brussels in 1827 by the Lithographie royale de Jobard, the press of Marcellin Jobard, in two volumes, with a text by a society of men of letters drawn from the documents Napoleon dictated and corrected on Saint Helena. The plates are the work of Jean-Baptiste Madou (1796 to 1877), the leading Belgian lithographer of his generation, who worked closely with Jobard in the 1820s.

A surrender treated with this much respect for the defeated commander is unusual in campaign illustration, and the caption is careful to credit Provera with holding up the French army for a full day at the castle of Cosseria in April 1796. It is printed from the stone in black on a cream wove sheet, the tone built from crayon rather than from cut line, with no color added.

Condition: Age toning, darker at the edges; handling soiling along the edges and scattered foxing in the margins. Printed image clean.

Framed simply, with a generous mat to let the wide margins show, the plate suits a study, a paneled dining room or a corridor, and it sits naturally beside other Napoleonic material such as campaign maps and portraits of the marshals.
