German & Austro-Hungarian Army Uniforms, Cavalry, Infantry & Officers, c.1890

Set of four antique hand-coloured lithograph prints depicting late 19th-century German and Austro-Hungarian military uniforms in vivid detail. Each plate captures a variety of regiments, ranks, and roles, from front-line troops in the field to high-ranking officers in full dress. The scenes combine action, ceremonial display, and everyday military life, making them an exceptional visual record for historians, collectors, and enthusiasts of European military history.

The first plate focuses on the German Army, showing cavalry charges, mounted lancers, dragoons on foot, artillery personnel, and officers consulting maps in the field. The dynamic depiction of troops in action contrasts with the static detail of the individual uniforms.

The second plate presents more German Army figures, including dragoons, jägers, a mounted trumpeter, and officers in both ceremonial and operational contexts. Hunting scenes and camp life vignettes enrich the narrative, while mounted soldiers in full dress add a touch of regimental splendour.

The third plate highlights high-ranking German officers and ceremonial units, such as generals, guards, Bavarian officers, and uhlans, alongside artillerymen at range-finding exercises. The detailed portrayal of dress uniforms illustrates the grandeur of the late Imperial German Army.

The fourth plate shifts to the Austro-Hungarian Army, showing generals, infantry, lancers, artillery units, Landwehr troops, and Hungarian hussars in striking red and gold parade dress. Field scenes with soldiers marching, advancing, and engaging in rifle fire contrast with the elegance of mounted ceremonial officers.

Together, these four lithographs provide a rich visual survey of the uniforms, equipment, and varied roles within two of Europe’s most important late 19th-century armies. The precision of the hand colouring and the inclusion of labelled figures make them both decorative artworks and invaluable reference material.
