This is an original antique chromolithograph, printed in color on a pale blue gray ground, showing two powder flasks hanging on looped tan cords. The flask at the left is round, carved in relief as a curled horned beast attacked at the neck by a hound, with a toothed metal rim and a turned steel nozzle. The flask at the right is an orange brown leather pouch fitted with engraved silver gray steel mounts, a domed pierced knob and a long pointed charger hanging at its side. Both cast soft shadows on the colored ground.
The running head reads "LE MOYEN AGE ET LA RENAISSANCE." at the left and "OBJETS DIVERS." at the right. Within the image are the credits "Rivaud del.", "Chromolith. Lemercier." and "Ch. Walter lith.". The caption reads "POUDRIÈRES DE CHASSE ET DE GUERRE. TRAVAIL DU XVIe SIECLE." and "D'après les Originaux. Musée Royal d'Artillerie de Bruxelles" (hunting and war powder flasks, sixteenth century work; after the originals, Royal Artillery Museum, Brussels), followed by "F. Séré direxit".
Le Moyen Âge et la Renaissance was edited by Paul Lacroix, who also wrote as the Bibliophile Jacob, with Ferdinand Séré directing the illustrations, and was published in Paris in five volumes between 1848 and 1851. Its chapters, written by a range of specialists, survey the arts, crafts, sciences and customs of Europe from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, and its plates reproduce objects, manuscripts and buildings in public and private collections of the day. This plate comes from the fourth volume, of 1851, where it accompanies the section headed "Objets Divers" (miscellaneous objects).
The plate can be framed on its own or hung with other plates from the work.
Condition: Light age toning, a little darker toward the edges; occasional small spots in the margins.
