An original antique lithograph of Bonaparte's landing at Fréjus on his return from Egypt in October 1799, from Madou's Vie de Napoléon, published at Brussels in 1827. The sheet is lettered DÉBARQUEMENT A FREJUS (Landing at Fréjus) above the image. Bonaparte, in a long coat, stands with his officers on the shore path, a grenadier and a turbaned attendant among the party at the left and the ships and boats offshore behind them, while a peasant with a spade and a boy look on at the right and countrymen wave their hats under the trees.

The script caption below the image reads: Bonaparte prend possession du rivage avec seulement 150 hommes, aux acclamations des paysans. In English: Bonaparte takes possession of the shore with only 150 men, to the cheers of the peasants.

Jean-Baptiste Madou, who lived from 1796 to 1877, was a Brussels lithographer who later made his name as a painter of genre scenes. Vie de Napoléon, published at Brussels in 1827 in two volumes by Marcellin Jobard's Lithographie royale, belongs to the first decade of his career.

The return from Egypt opened the way to the coup of Brumaire a month later, and the plate treats it as a quiet coastal scene rather than a triumph. The printing is lithographic, black on wove paper, and the sheet is uncolored.

Condition: Age toning, darker at the edges; handling soiling along the edges and scattered foxing in the margins. Printed image clean.

The oblong format hangs well over a desk or a mantelpiece, and because the plates share one format and one style of lettering, a group bought together reads as a set rather than as an assortment.
