An original antique engraving, colored by hand, captioned "LIEUT. GENERAL LORD HILL, K.B." He rides a pale chestnut horse with a light mane and tail, walking toward the right, and holds the reins in both hands with no sword drawn. He wears a black bicorne with a white and red plume, a scarlet coat with dark blue facings and gold aiguillette and lace, a light blue sash across the chest and a crimson waist sash, white breeches and black boots. The saddle cloth is blue green bordered in yellow. Behind him a grassy plain runs to a few clumps of trees and low blue hills.
Below the image at the left is the signature "Meyron del." and at the right "Romney sculp." The publication line reads "London, Published by R. Evans. Whites Row, Spitalfields, Octr. 10.1815." Lord Hill served as one of Wellington's senior commanders in the Peninsula and at Waterloo.
The plate was issued for The History of the Wars occasioned by the French Revolution by William Nicholson, LL.D., printed in London for Thomas Kelly of 17 Paternoster Row. Its title page promises biographical sketches of the public characters of Europe, with an account of the Congress of Vienna, the escape from Elba, Waterloo and the exile to Saint Helena. The plates carry their own engraved publication line naming Richard Evans of Whites Row, Spitalfields, London.
The quiet walking pose and soft palette make it an easy companion to the more dramatic plates of the set.
Condition: Light uneven toning, browner toward the edges. Marked handling soiling along the left, right and top edges. A few small foxing spots in the margin. Slight wear at the top left corner. Several larger brown marks.
