An original antique print, a copper engraving colored by hand, lettered "Habit of the Prince of Orange in 1572." A bearded man with a small ruff stands facing the viewer in a steel breastplate with articulated shoulder pieces and sleeves, trimmed with gold bands. His full red trunk hose reach to the knee, banded with a gold stripe and tied below with ribbons, over white stockings and brown shoes. He rests a baton against his shoulder with one hand and holds the hilt of his sword with the other, the blade angling down behind him toward the viewer's left.
The English title is engraved in script beneath the image: "Habit of the Prince of Orange in 1572." Below it is the French caption "Prince d' Orange." (in English, "Prince of Orange"), and the plate number 140 is engraved at lower right. No engraver or designer is named on the plate.
This is a plate from Volume II of A Collection of the Dresses of Different Nations, Antient and Modern, published in London in 1757 by Thomas Jefferys in the Strand. Its title page announces the figures as taken "After the Designs of Holbein, Vandyke, Hollar, and others," and the book was also titled in French, Recueil des Habillements de Différentes Nations. It falls among the figures from the Low Countries in the volume. The Prince of Orange in 1572 was William I, known as William the Silent, the leader of the revolt of the Netherlands against Spain, though the plate names only the title. The year in the English title is the date of the costume shown, not of the print, which was published in 1757.
The single figure on a plain ground suits a simple mount and a narrow frame, and it hangs well beside other plates from the same series.
Condition: Complete sheet, minor nicks along the left edge. Light, uneven toning, lightly soiled along the bottom, left, right and top edges. No foxing noted in the margins.
This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed. Any framed or interior images are shown for presentation and inspiration only, unless the listing explicitly states that the item is sold framed.
