An original antique engraving, colored by hand, captioned "FIELD MARSHAL PRINCE SWARTZENBURGH." Field Marshal Prince Schwarzenberg rides a chestnut horse with a white blaze, walking to the left. He wears a black bicorn with white plumes and a red ornament, a white coat with a red collar and red cuffs, a pale blue sash across his chest, several orders and stars, white breeches and black riding boots. A saber in a gilt scabbard hangs at his side. His saddlecloth is green with a broad gold fringe, and a fur holster cover sits before the saddle. Behind the horse lies a camp of white tents with a flag, set against a range of low gray hills. The face is worked in stipple, with dark side whiskers.
Below the image the plate is signed "Meyron Del." at the lower left and "Romney Sculp." at the lower right. The publication line reads "London Pub by Rich.d Evans Whites Row Spitalfields 1815." and the page reference "Page 448" is engraved at the lower right. The caption spells the name as engraved, "SWARTZENBURGH". Schwarzenberg commanded the Allied armies at the Battle of Leipzig in 1813.
This portrait comes from The History of the Wars occasioned by the French Revolution by William Nicholson, LL.D., printed for Thomas Kelly, 17 Paternoster Row, London. The book offers biographical sketches of the public characters of Europe and an account running through the Congress of Vienna, the escape from Elba, Waterloo and the exile to Saint Helena. Each plate bears its own engraved line naming Richard Evans of Whites Row, Spitalfields, as publisher.
The green, white and chestnut palette is calm and balanced, and the composition suits a study or library wall.
Condition: Light uneven toning, browner towards the edges. Marked handling soiling along the left, right and top edges. Foxing over much of the margin. Complete sheet, all four corners present. One larger brown mark.
