An original antique lithograph of Bonaparte's reception by the Directory, from Vie de Napoléon, published at Brussels in 1827. The sheet is lettered RÉCEPTION PAR LE DIRECTOIRE in capitals above the image. Beneath a great draped canopy at the left the Directors sit in plumed hats and embroidered cloaks while one of them steps forward to receive the treaty from Bonaparte; officers stand behind him, ladies in high waisted white are seated at the right, and the palace courtyard behind is hung with flags and crowded with onlookers.

The printed caption below the image reads: Bonaparte remet aux cinq Directeurs le traité de Campo-formio. In English: Bonaparte hands the treaty of Campo Formio to the five Directors.

The plate comes from Vie de Napoléon, issued in two volumes at Brussels in 1827 by Marcellin Jobard's Lithographie royale, its text compiled by a society of men of letters from the documents Napoleon dictated and corrected at Saint Helena. The lithographs are credited to the young Jean-Baptiste Madou (1796 to 1877), later celebrated in Belgium as a painter of genre scenes.

The treaty of Campo Formio, signed in October 1797, ended the war with Austria, and the Directory received its victorious general at a public ceremony in the courtyard of the Luxembourg Palace on 10 December 1797. The plumed hats and cloaks of the Directors are one of the great sights of Revolutionary costume. It is a crayon lithograph printed in black, uncolored as issued, with the lettered title above the image and the caption in script below.

Condition: Age toning, darker at the edges; handling soiling along the edges and scattered foxing in the margins. Printed image clean.

Every plate in the series shares the same format and lettering, so a group framed alike reads as a set over a desk, a mantelpiece or along a corridor.
