An original antique engraving, colored by hand, captioned "LIEU.T GENERAL SIR THO.S PICTON." Sir Thomas Picton rides a gray horse walking to the right and points ahead with his gloved right hand, in which he also holds a short red telescope. He wears a black bicorn trimmed with feathers and a red and white plume, a red coat with gold epaulettes and gold loops, a crimson waist sash, white breeches and black riding boots. His saddlecloth is blue with a gold fringe, with a fur holster cover in front. Behind the horse at the right stretches a camp of white tents with red pennants, beneath gray mountains. The face is worked in stipple.
There is no engraver's signature on the plate. The publication line reads "London Pub. by Rich.d Evans Whites Row, Spitalfields Oct.r 1815." Picton was killed at Waterloo while leading his division.
It belongs to The History of the Wars occasioned by the French Revolution by William Nicholson, LL.D., printed in London for Thomas Kelly of 17 Paternoster Row. Its title page promises biographical sketches of the public characters of Europe and carries the story through the Congress of Vienna, the escape from Elba, Waterloo and the exile to Saint Helena. The plates themselves name Richard Evans of Whites Row, Spitalfields, in their engraved publication lines.
Red, blue and gold on a pale horse give the plate a crisp, military look.
Condition: Light uneven toning, browner towards the edges. Marked handling soiling along the left, right and top edges. Foxing over much of the margin. Slight wear at the top left corner. Several larger brown marks.
