An original antique lithograph of the camp of Boulogne and the flotilla prepared against England, from Madou's Vie de Napoléon, published at Brussels in 1827. The sheet is lettered CAMP DE BOULOGNE in open capitals above the image. The harbor of Boulogne with its jetty, tower and moored vessels of the flotilla beyond the camp huts, the tricolor flying from a tall staff at the left, a mounted dragoon and soldiers in the middle ground, and a group of officers conferring on the height at the right beside a gun.
The printed caption below the image reads: Napoléon presse les préparatifs de l'expédition qui s'organize contre l'Angleterre. Sa présence accroit l'énergie et l'ardeur des troupes de terre et de mer In English: Napoleon hastens the preparations for the expedition being organized against England. His presence increases the energy and ardor of the troops on land and at sea.
This plate belongs to the two volume Vie de Napoléon published at Brussels in 1827 by the Lithographie royale de Jobard, with a text compiled from the documents Napoleon dictated on Saint Helena. The plates were drawn on stone by Jean-Baptiste Madou, and the sheets have long been collected singly as well as in the bound work.
The camp of Boulogne, where the Grande Armée gathered between 1803 and 1805 for the invasion of England, is collected on both sides of the Channel, and the plate shows the camp and harbor together. The printing is lithographic, black on wove paper, and the sheet is uncolored.
Condition: Light wear to the top left corner. Age toning, darker at the edges; handling soiling along the edges and scattered foxing in the margins. Printed image clean.
A single sheet from this series frames well in a plain dark molding with a wide off white mat, and a row of three or four hung together makes a coherent wall for a study, a library or a hallway.
This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed. Any framed or interior images are shown for presentation and inspiration only, unless the listing explicitly states that the item is sold framed.
