An original antique lithograph of the consuls taking possession of the Tuileries, from Vie de Napoléon, published at Brussels in 1827. The sheet is lettered INSTAL.on DU GOUV.t CONSULAIRE AUX TUILERIES in capitals above the image. The domed palace front fills the left half of the sheet, with troops drawn up along its whole length, while the First Consul on a white horse reviews a line of grenadiers at the center and a mounted officer and drummers occupy the left foreground.

The printed caption below the image reads: A la suite d'une revue militaire, les consuls environnés d'un brillant appareil s'établirent dans l'ancien séjour des rois. In English: After a military review, the consuls, surrounded by brilliant ceremony, took up residence in the former home of the kings.

Vie de Napoléon appeared at Brussels in 1827, in two volumes, from the Lithographie royale de Jobard. Its title describes a text written by a society of men of letters from the new documents dictated and corrected at Saint Helena by Napoleon himself, and its lithographs are credited to Jean-Baptiste Madou (1796 to 1877), then at the start of a long career as Belgium's leading genre painter.

The consuls moved into the Tuileries on 19 February 1800, and the move from the Luxembourg to the old royal palace was understood at once as a statement of where power now lay. The Tuileries palace burned in 1871, so every view taken before the fire has a value of its own. It is a crayon lithograph printed in black, uncolored as issued, with the lettered title above the image and the caption in script below.

Condition: Light wear to the bottom right corner. Age toning, darker at the edges; handling soiling along the edges and scattered foxing in the margins. Printed image clean.

A single sheet frames well in a plain dark molding with a wide off white mat, and three or four plates from the series hung together make a coherent wall for a study, a library or a hallway.
