An original antique engraving, colored by hand, captioned "HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS, THE PRINCE REGENT, OF GREAT BRITAIN." The Prince Regent rides a pale cream horse walking to the right over a leopard skin saddlecloth, with a fur holster cover before him. He wears a black bicorn with a red and white plume and gold tassels, a red coat with heavy gold epaulettes, a blue ribbon across his chest with a star, a crimson waist sash, white breeches and black riding boots. Behind him at the right a large royal standard flies, quartered with the lions of England, the lion of Scotland and the harp of Ireland, with a crowned shield at the center. Below it stands a stone gateway crowned by a lion, a unicorn and a shield, through which an officer in a blue coat rides out on a chestnut horse; upturned cannon barrels serve as posts. The face is worked in stipple.

There is no engraver's signature on the plate. The publication line reads "London, Published June 16. 1815. by Rich. Evans, Whites Row, Spital fields." The Prince Regent later reigned as George IV.

The plate was issued for The History of the Wars occasioned by the French Revolution by William Nicholson, LL.D., printed in London for Thomas Kelly of 17 Paternoster Row. The title page promises biographical sketches of the public characters of Europe, together with an account of the Congress of Vienna, the escape from Elba, Waterloo and the exile to Saint Helena, while the plates carry their own publication line naming Richard Evans of Whites Row, Spitalfields.

The gateway and royal standard give this plate more incident than most single portraits, and the colors stay fresh and bright.

Condition: Light uneven toning, browner towards the edges. Marked handling soiling along the left, right and top edges. A few small foxing spots in the margin. Slight wear at the top left corner.
