An original antique lithograph of the storming of Alexandria, from Madou's Vie de Napoléon, published at Brussels in 1827. The sheet is lettered PRISE D'ALEXANDRIE in open capitals above the image. French infantry scale the walls and towers of Alexandria under heavy smoke, an officer seen from behind raises his saber in the foreground, and the general stands with his staff at the right of center beside a column of grenadiers.
The printed caption below the image reads: Bonaparte fait attaquer la ville sur trois points différens, et s'en empare dans la journée. In English: Bonaparte has the city attacked at three different points, and takes it within the day.
This plate belongs to the two volume Vie de Napoléon published at Brussels in 1827 by the Lithographie royale de Jobard, with a text compiled from the documents Napoleon dictated on Saint Helena. The plates were drawn on stone by Jean-Baptiste Madou, and the sheets have long been collected singly as well as in the bound work.
The capture of Alexandria on 2 July 1798 opened the Egyptian expedition, the part of the story with the widest appeal, and the plate shows the escalade of the walls in progress. It is printed from the stone in black on a cream wove sheet, the tone built from crayon rather than from cut line, with no color added.
Condition: Age toning, darker at the edges; handling soiling along the edges and scattered foxing in the margins. Printed image clean.
This is a print that rewards being hung at eye level where the caption can be read, and it makes a natural gift for a reader of Napoleonic history or a collector of military prints.
This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed. Any framed or interior images are shown for presentation and inspiration only, unless the listing explicitly states that the item is sold framed.
