Very good
Only light signs of age, such as faint toning.
Good
Normal signs of age for a sheet of this period: toning, some foxing, small marks or neat old repairs.

Every fault we see is written in the condition note, and the whole sheet is shown uncropped in the photos.

An original antique lithograph of the papal agents handing over works of art under the treaty of Tolentino, from Madou's Vie de Napoléon, published at Brussels in 1827. The sheet is lettered EXÉCUTION DU TRAITÉ DE TOLLENTINO (Execution of the Treaty of Tolentino) above the image. In a vaulted sculpture gallery, clergy, a halberdier and French commissioners meet at the center, porters wrestle a crated painting at the left, soldiers and a dog wait at the right and a toppled column lies in the foreground. The statues lit in the niches are the Apollo Belvedere at the left and the Laocoön at the right.

The script caption below the image reads: Les agens du Pape remettent aux commissaires français cent chef-d'œuvres des arts et cinq cents manuscrits. In English: The Pope's agents hand over to the French commissioners one hundred masterpieces of art and five hundred manuscripts.

Jean-Baptiste Madou, who lived from 1796 to 1877, was a Brussels lithographer who later made his name as a painter of genre scenes. Vie de Napoléon, published at Brussels in 1827 in two volumes by Marcellin Jobard's Lithographie royale, belongs to the first decade of his career.

The treaty of Tolentino, signed in February 1797, sent a hundred works of art and five hundred manuscripts from the papal collections to Paris, and both statues shown here made that journey. The printing is lithographic, black on wove paper, and the sheet is uncolored.

Condition: Light wear to the bottom left corner. Age toning, darker at the edges; heavier soiling along the edges and scattered foxing in the margins. Printed image clean.

The oblong format hangs well over a desk or a mantelpiece, and because the plates share one format and one style of lettering, a group bought together reads as a set rather than as an assortment.
