West Point and the Highlands, an original steel engraving after a painting by Henry Fenn, engraved by S. V. Hunt and published in New York by D. Appleton and Co. The plate title is lettered in script below the image, with the copyright line "Entered according to Act of Congress A.D. 1869."

From a raised earthwork in the foreground, a group of artillerymen work a large gun, and one soldier at the right sights along a rifle. Beyond them the Hudson River narrows between steep, wooded hills, with sailing vessels and small boats scattered across the water. A stand of masts and low shapes lies near the bank in the middle distance, and the far reach of the river fades into haze under a broken, cloudy sky.

West Point stands on a bend in the Hudson that was fortified during the Revolution, and it has housed the United States Military Academy since 1802. The view puts the cannons in the foreground against the long river view that made the Highlands a favorite subject of American landscape artists.
