About battle scenes
Battle prints were the war reporting of their day. Engravers worked from eyewitness sketches, dispatches and official histories, and their plates appeared in books, newspapers and as separate prints within months of the event.
The collection spans the 1632 engravings of the Eighty Years' War, Merian's battles of the Thirty Years' War, Rugendas and Basire on the wars of the early 1700s, Napoleon's campaigns from Castiglione to Waterloo, Crimean War lithographs, colonial battles in Epinal prints, and the Sino-Japanese and Russo-Japanese wars in Meiji woodblock triptychs.

Questions about battle scenes
Are the battle prints contemporary with the battles?
Many are; others were made decades later for histories of the wars. Each listing gives the date the print itself was made, and the date of the battle where it differs.
What is a Meiji war triptych?
A Japanese woodblock print in three joined sheets, made in the 1890s and 1900s to report the Sino-Japanese and Russo-Japanese wars, printed in strong aniline colours.
